Marie Hamsun

Marie Hamsun was a Norwegian actress and writer, who was married to the famous author Knut Hamsun. She was born in Elverum, Hedmark, as the eldest child of a wealthy family. She moved to Oslo in 1897, where she attended a private school and later worked as a governess and teacher. She became interested in theater and joined the Norwegian Actor Society, where she met Dore Lavik, with whom she had a relationship. She also met Knut Hamsun, who was 22 years older than her, and married him in 1909. They had four children and lived on several farms, including Nørholm, where they settled in 1918. Marie Hamsun wrote two collections of poems and several children's books, most notably the Bygdebarn series, which follows a sibling group from a rural environment similar to her own childhood. She also wrote two memoirs about her life with Knut Hamsun: The Rainbow (1953) and Under the Golden Rain (1959). She shared her husband's political views and supported the Nazi occupation of Norway during World War II. She joined the Nasjonal Samling party and toured Germany reciting Knut Hamsun's works. After the war, she was sentenced to three years of hard labor for treason, but was released after nine months due to a general amnesty. She died in 1969 at the age of 87. [1](^1^) [2](^2^) [3](^3^)
