Hans Henrik Jaeger

Hans Henrik Jæger was a Norwegian writer, philosopher and anarchist political activist who was part of the Oslo (then Kristiania)-based bohemian group known as the Kristiania Bohemians. He advocated for sexual freedom, individualism and social reform. He was prosecuted for his novel Fra Kristiania-bohêmen, which was considered immoral and blasphemous by the authorities. He also lost his job as a stenographer at the Parliament of Norway. He was defended in court by Ludvig Meyer, a prominent lawyer and politician. He had to flee Norway in 1887 after he was sentenced to more prison time for printing his novel in Sweden. He spent most of his life in Paris, where he wrote more books and essays on philosophy, anarchism and socialism. He was a friend of Edvard Munch, who painted his portrait. He died of pneumonia in 1910 in Oslo.
