Christian Krohg

Christian Krohg was a Norwegian naturalist painter, illustrator, author and journalist. He was inspired by the realism art movement and often chose motifs from everyday life, especially its darker or socially inferior sides. He was also involved in the Kristiania Bohemian movement and the editor of the journal Impressionisten. He wrote a novel called Albertine, which caused a scandal and was confiscated by the police for its depiction of prostitution. He was the director and the first professor at the Norwegian Academy of Arts from 1909 to 1925. He taught many prominent Norwegian artists, such as Edvard Munch, whom he also supported and encouraged. He died in 1925 at the age of 73.
