Jonas Lie

Jonas Lie was a Norwegian writer who was one of the Four Greats of 19th century Norwegian literature, along with Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, and Alexander Kielland. He wrote novels, poems, and plays that reflected the nature, folk life, and social spirit of his native Norway. He was influenced by the realism and naturalism movements, and often explored themes such as the sea, the law, the family, and the supernatural. Some of his most famous works include The Visionary or Pictures from Nordland (1870), The Barque "Future" (1872), The Family at Gilje (1883), and Weird Tales from Northern Seas (1891–92). He also wrote fairy tales, historical novels, and memoirs. He lived in various places in Europe, such as Rome, Paris, and Berlin, but returned to Norway in 1893. He died of heart failure in 1908, at the age of 74. He is widely regarded as one of the most original and influential Norwegian writers of his time.
