Jacob Breda Bull

Jacob Breda Bull was a Norwegian author, journalist and editor. He was born in Rendalen, where his father was a parish priest. He graduated with a degree in theology in 1876, but never worked as a priest. Instead, he became a journalist and founded the newspaper Dagen in 1878. He was also the leader of the Norwegian Authors' Union from 1900 to 1903. He wrote novels, stories, poems, historical works and plays. He is best known for his novella Vesleblakken, based on a childhood memory from Rendalen, and his other folk life depictions from Østerdalen. He also wrote historical novels such as Mørke Aarhundreder, contemporary novels such as Livets Triumf, and social criticism such as Den nye Gud. He was the father of poet Olaf Bull and the grandfather of author Jan Bull. He received the Order of St. Olav in 1911. He died in Copenhagen in 1930 and was buried at Ytre Rendal Church. His childhood home in Rendalen is now the Bull Museum, a biographical and cultural history museum.
