About me / Bio:

Olav Kielland was a Norwegian composer and conductor who was active in the first half of the 20th century. He was the first Norwegian artistic director of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and also led other orchestras in Norway and abroad. He was offered the position of chief conductor by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, but could not accept it due to the outbreak of World War II. He was accused of collaborating with the Nazi occupation, but was later cleared of the charges. He moved to Bø, Telemark in 1955, where he studied the Hardanger fiddle and composed music influenced by Norwegian folk music. He wrote several orchestral and chamber works, as well as songs, choral pieces, and operas. He was awarded the King's Medal of Merit and the Order of St. Olav for his contributions to Norwegian music.
