Antonio Aguilar

Antonio Aguilar was one of the most popular and influential Mexican singers and actors of his generation. He began his singing career in the 1940s and then debuted in national Mexican cinema in 1952, during its Golden era. He recorded over 150 albums, which sold 25 million copies, and acted in more than 120 films. He was known for his brilliant portrayals of revolutionary and folk-song heroes in historical films, such as Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa. He also popularized the Mexican equestrian sport la charrería to international audiences, earning him the nickname "El Charro de México" (Mexico's Horseman). He was married to famous singer and actress Flor Silvestre, with whom he had two sons, Antonio Aguilar Hijo and Pepe Aguilar, who also became singers and actors. His family is known as "La Dinastía Aguilar" (The Aguilar Dynasty). He won several awards and honors, including the Golden Ariel, the Latin ACE Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He died of pneumonia in 2007 at the age of 88.
