Adam Kozlowiecki

Adam Kozłowiecki was a Polish Jesuit priest who became a cardinal and a missionary in Zambia. He was born in 1911 in a noble family and studied at a Jesuit school. He was ordained in 1937 and soon after was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz and then Dachau. He survived the concentration camps and was released in 1945. He then volunteered to go to Northern Rhodesia, where he taught and evangelized for several years. He was appointed the first Archbishop of Lusaka in 1959 and served until 1969, when he resigned to make way for an African successor. He continued to work as a missionary and a pastor in Zambia until his death in 2007. He was known for his humility, charity, and zeal for the Gospel. He was created a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1998, who admired him as a hero and a friend. He died at the age of 96 and was buried in the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka.
