Pawel Huelle

Paweł Huelle was a Polish prose writer who was born and died in Gdańsk. He studied Polish philology at Gdańsk University and was involved in the Solidarity movement in the 1980s. He worked as a journalist, a lecturer, and a director of TVP3 Gdańsk. He was also the literary manager of the Municipal Theater of Gdynia. His literary debut was the novel Weiser Dawidek, which was adapted into a film by Wojciech Marczewski. He wrote several other novels and short stories, often inspired by his hometown and its history. He won the Paszport Polityki Award in 2001 and was nominated for the Nike Award in 2008. He was also honored with the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis. He was a member of the Polish PEN Club and the Ruch Stu. He was married to painter Ida Łotocka-Huelle and had a son named Juliusz. He died on 27 November 2023 at the age of 66.
