Jerzy Chromik was a Polish long-distance runner who specialized in the 3000m steeplechase. He was a member of the famous Wunderteam of Polish athletics. He was trained by Jan Vorreiter, Jan Mulak, and Tadeusz Kępka. He competed for Górnik Mysłowice, OWKS Kraków, and Górnik Zabrze. He was the European champion in the 3000m steeplechase at the 1958 Stockholm championships. He also participated in the 1954 and 1962 European championships, and the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Games, but without success. He set three world records in the 3000m steeplechase: 8:41.2 in Brno (August 1955), 8:40.2 in Budapest (September 1955), and 8:32.0 in Warsaw (August 1958). He also won the main race (3000m) at the Kusociński Memorial in Warsaw twice (in 1955 and 1958), and the Cross L'Humanité in Paris in 1959. He was an engineer and a miner. He was awarded the Kalós Kagathós medal. Since 1989, a street race in his memory has been held in Mysłowice. He died of a heart attack in 1987 at the age of 57.
