Paul Unongo was a Nigerian politician and elder statesman who served as the Minister of Power and Steel in the Second Republic. He was also the Secretary General of the Nigerian People's Party (NPP) and the Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF). He was born on 26 September 1935 in Turan, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria. He belonged to the Kwaghngise-Anure-Abera ancestry. He was a strong advocate for the unity and development of Nigeria, especially the northern region. He was involved in various political movements and coalitions, such as the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP). He was also a vocal critic of some government policies and actions, such as the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, in 2019. He died on 29 November 2022 in Jos, Plateau State, after a brief illness. He was 87 years old. He was mourned by many Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State. He was described as a patriot, a nationalist, and a peacemaker.
