Maki Kureishi

Maki Kureishi was a Pakistani poet and writer who wrote in English. She was born in Calcutta, India in 1927 and came from a Parsee family. Her father was a psychiatrist and her mother had grown up in Germany. She was a prodigious reader and started writing poetry at a young age. She married Nurul Hasan Jafarey, a civil servant and a literary figure, in 1947 and migrated to Pakistan after the partition. She taught at the University of Karachi for 30 years and wrote several books of poetry and prose, including Wordfall, The Far Thing, and For My Grandson. She also wrote a film script and a TV series. She was known for her delicate and highly sensitive poetry, which reflected her personal experiences and observations. She died in Karachi in 1995 and was the aunt of English writer Hanif Kureishi.
