Qasim Mehdi was a Pakistani molecular biologist and a professor of physics at the Lahore University of Management Sciences. He received his MSc and PhD in physics from Imperial College London under the supervision of Paul Matthews and Abdus Salam. He worked at various institutions, including the University of Chicago, CERN, DESY, ICTP, and COMSTECH. He published several research papers in peer-reviewed journals on topics such as superstring theory, supersymmetry, and noncommutative geometry. He was also a social and democratic activist, who supported various causes such as human rights, women's rights, minority rights, and environmental protection. He was a close friend of physicists Pervez Hoodbhoy, Asad Naqvi, and Riazuddin. He received the Royal Society Award in 1968 and the Spirit of Abdus Salam Award in 2016. He died of natural causes in Karachi on 28 September 2016. He was 75 years old.
