About me / Bio:
Ibrahim Ismail Chundrigar was a Pakistani politician and lawyer who served as the sixth prime minister of Pakistan for a brief period of 55 days in 1957. He was born in Ahmedabad in 1897 to a wealthy family of landowners. He graduated from Bombay University and started practicing law in 1920. He joined the Muslim League in 1936 and became a prominent leader of the party in Bombay. He was elected to the Bombay Legislative Council in 1937 and later to the Constituent Assembly of India in 1946. He was appointed as the Minister of Commerce and Industry in the Interim Government of India in 1946. After the partition of India in 1947, he moved to Pakistan and became the Minister of Trade and Commerce in the first cabinet of Pakistan. He also served as the ambassador to Afghanistan, the governor of North-West Frontier Province, the governor of West Punjab, and the Minister of Law and Justice. He became the prime minister of Pakistan in 1957 after the resignation of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy. However, he faced opposition from the president, Iskander Mirza, and the army chief, Ayub Khan, who wanted to impose martial law in the country. He was unable to secure the confidence of the parliament and was forced to resign after 55 days in office. He was succeeded by Feroze Khan Noon. He died in 1960 in London. He is regarded as a competent and honest politician who tried to uphold the democratic values in Pakistan. [2]
