Georges Guetary

Georges Guétary was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to Greek parents. His father was a textile executive and his uncle was a famous pianist. He studied music in Egypt and in Paris, and made his stage debut in 1937. He performed as a singer and dancer with the famed chanteuse Mistinguett at the Casino de Paris. He also appeared in many musical films and operettas, such as Quand le cœur chante, La Belle de Cadix, and An American in Paris. He was known for his charming voice, his elegant style, and his versatility. He received a Tony Award for Best Foreign Performer for his role in Arms and the Girl on Broadway. He was also a successful producer of musical shows in London and New York. He became a French citizen in 1950. He married Janine Guyon, a ballet dancer, in 1946 and had two children. He died of a heart attack in 1997 at the age of 82. He is buried in Mougins, France.
