Abbas II of Egypt

Abbas II was the last khedive of Egypt and Sudan, ruling from 1892 to 1914. He was the great-great-grandson of Muhammad Ali, the founder of the modern Egyptian state. He was educated in Europe and had a good command of several languages. He tried to assert his independence from the British, who had occupied Egypt since 1882, and supported the nationalist movement that demanded constitutional government. He also opposed the British expansion in the Sudan and the construction of the Aswan Dam. He was deposed by the British in 1914, after he declared his support for the Ottoman Empire in World War I. He spent the rest of his life in exile, mainly in Switzerland, where he died in 1944. He was buried in Cairo in 1954.
