Hayat Sharara was an Iraqi writer, translator and educator. She was born in Najaf in 1935 and moved to Baghdad with her family in the mid-1940s. She graduated from high school and completed her baccalaureate but could not attend Baghdad University because of her political activism. She worked as a university lecturer and a translator for the Ministry of Industry. She wrote several novels and short stories, as well as translations of Russian and French literature. She committed suicide in 1997, along with her daughter Maha, to protest the intervention of Baathist intelligence services in university life and the economic embargo imposed on Iraq after the first Gulf War. Her semi-autobiographical novel When Darkness Falls, which she completed shortly before her death, was published in 2000.
