Mohammad al Sadr

Mohammad al-Sadr was a prominent Iraqi politician and the first Shi'ite to become prime minister of Iraq. He served as the prime minister from March 1947 to January 1948. He also held various ministerial positions, such as justice, education, foreign affairs, interior, and finance. He was not popular among the young liberal and nationalist politicians who opposed his close ties with Britain and his harsh treatment of dissenters. He signed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty of 1948, which granted Iraq independence but also gave Britain military and economic privileges. His government was toppled by a coup led by Mohammad Hassan al-Sadr, who was supported by the anti-British Al-Wathbah uprising. Mohammad fled to England and later returned to Iraq, where he died in 1956.
