Helder Câmara was a Brazilian Catholic archbishop who served as the Archbishop of Olinda and Recife from 1964 to 1985, during the military dictatorship in Brazil. He was an advocate of liberation theology and a champion of human rights and democracy. He was known for his criticism of the social and economic inequalities in Brazil and his support for the poor and oppressed. He was also a promoter of ecumenism and dialogue among religions. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize four times and received many international awards and honors. He was declared a Servant of God by the Catholic Church in 2015. He was born in Fortaleza, Ceará, in 1909, and entered the seminary in 1923. He was ordained a priest in 1931 and became a bishop in 1952. He attended the Second Vatican Council and played a significant role in drafting the document Gaudium et spes. He was also a founder of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops and the Latin American Episcopal Council. He was elected president of the UN General Assembly in 1968 and presided over the vote on the creation of the state of Israel. He was a friend and mentor of many prominent Brazilian figures, such as Paulo Freire, Leonardo Boff, and Dom Pedro Casaldáliga. He wrote several books and articles on spirituality, social justice, and peace. He died of heart failure in 1999, at the age of 90.
