Prince George of Greece and Denmark

Prince George of Greece and Denmark was the second son and child of George I of Greece and Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. He was born on 24 June 1869 at Mon Repos, a royal villa on the island of Corfu. He had a close relationship with his uncle Prince Valdemar of Denmark, who was an admiral in the Danish navy. He accompanied his cousin Nicholas II, the future Emperor of Russia, on his voyage to Asia in 1891 and saved his life from an assassination attempt in Japan. He also helped organize the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens with his brothers Constantine and Nicholas. He served as the High Commissioner of the Cretan State from 1898 to 1906, overseeing its transition from Ottoman rule to union with Greece. He married Marie Bonaparte, a wealthy heiress and a descendant of Napoleon Bonaparte, in 1907. They had two children, Prince Peter and Princess Eugénie. He was involved in several diplomatic missions and military conflicts during his life, such as the Balkan Wars, World War I, and World War II. He died of heart failure on 25 November 1957 at Saint-Cloud, France. He was buried at the Royal Cemetery of Tatoi Palace in Greece. He is remembered for his courage, his service to Crete, and his loyalty to his family.
