About me / Bio:
George V was the last king of Hanover, reigning from 18 November 1851 to 20 September 1866. He was the only child of King Ernest Augustus and Queen Frederica, and a grandson of George III of the United Kingdom. He lost the sight of one eye due to a childhood illness in 1828, and the other eye due to an accident in 1833. He married Marie of Saxe-Altenburg in 1843, and they had three children. He succeeded his father as king of Hanover in 1851, but his reign was marked by political conflicts with Prussia over the German Confederation and the Schleswig-Holstein question. He supported Austria in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, and as a result, Prussia annexed Hanover and deposed him. He went into exile in Austria and later France, where he died in 1878. He was the last Hanoverian monarch to claim the British throne, as his descendants renounced their rights in 1913.
