Charlotte Augusta Matilda

Charlotte, Princess Royal (Charlotte Augusta Matilda; 29 September 1766 – 6 October 1828), was the eldest daughter and fourth child of George III of the United Kingdom and his wife, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She was designated as Princess Royal on 22 June 1789. She married Frederick, Duke of Württemberg, in 1797 and became the Duchess of Württemberg. In 1803, her husband became the Elector of Württemberg and in 1806, he was crowned as the King of Württemberg. Charlotte became the Electress and then the Queen consort of Württemberg. She was known for her intelligence, strong character, and patronage of arts and literature. She had a close relationship with her father and some of her siblings, especially her brother George IV. She also corresponded with some of the leading figures of her time, such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, and Napoleon Bonaparte. She died of pneumonia at Schloss Ludwigsburg on 6 October 1828, aged 62. She was buried at Schlosskirche in Ludwigsburg. She had no children from her marriage and was succeeded as Queen consort by her husband's second wife, Pauline Therese of Württemberg.
