About me / Bio:
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a German composer and musician of the Classical period. He was the second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and Maria Barbara Bach. He was also the godson of Georg Philipp Telemann, a friend of his father. He received his musical education from his father and other teachers, and also studied law at the University of Leipzig and Frankfurt an der Oder. He started his career as a harpsichordist in the court of Frederick the Great of Prussia, where he worked for nearly 30 years. He later became the director of music in Hamburg, succeeding Telemann as the Kapellmeister. He composed a large number of works for various instruments and genres, especially for keyboard. He was one of the founders of the empfindsamer Stil (sensitive style), which emphasized expression and emotion in music. He also wrote an influential treatise on keyboard playing, which was studied by many composers, including Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. He was highly regarded by his contemporaries and later generations as an original and innovative composer. He was also known as the Berlin Bach or the Hamburg Bach to distinguish him from his brother Johann Christian, who was called the London Bach. He died in Hamburg in 1788 from complications after a cataract surgery. He was buried in the Michaeliskirche in Hamburg. [^10^]
