About me / Bio:
Georg Philipp Telemann was one of the most prolific and influential composers of the late Baroque period. He wrote over 3,000 works in almost every musical genre, including sacred and secular vocal music, orchestral music, chamber music, and keyboard music. He was also a skilled performer on various instruments, such as the violin, flute, oboe, recorder, viola da gamba, and harpsichord. He was self-taught in music and composed against his family's wishes, who wanted him to pursue a career in law or theology. He studied at the University of Leipzig but soon devoted himself to music. He held several positions as a Kapellmeister (music director) in different cities, such as Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach, and Frankfurt. In 1721, he settled in Hamburg, where he became the Kantor (choir director) of the Johanneum Lateinschule and the music director of the city's five main churches. He also founded a public concert series, the Collegium Musicum, and a music publishing house. He was widely respected and admired by his contemporaries, including Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, who were his friends. He was also the godfather and namesake of Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel, who became his successor in Hamburg. Telemann's music reflects his cosmopolitan taste and his exposure to various national styles. He incorporated elements from French, Italian, German, and Polish music into his compositions. He also experimented with new forms and techniques, such as the use of scordatura (alternative tuning), mixed meters, chromaticism, and programmatic effects. He was at the forefront of musical innovation and contributed to the development of the galant style that paved the way for the Classical era. Telemann's music was widely popular and influential during his lifetime and for several decades after his death. However, his reputation declined in the 19th century as his music was overshadowed by that of Bach and Handel. His works were largely neglected until the 20th century, when a revival of interest in Baroque music led to their rediscovery and appreciation. Today, Telemann is recognized as one of the greatest composers of the Baroque period and one of the most versatile and original musicians in history.
