About me / Bio:
Balthasar Neumann was a German architect and military artillery engineer who developed a refined brand of Baroque architecture, fusing Austrian, Bohemian, Italian, and French elements to design some of the most impressive buildings of the period. He was born in Eger, Bohemia, in 1687 and apprenticed to a bell-founder. He emigrated to Würzburg in 1711 and gained the patronage of the ruling prince-bishop, a member of the Schönborn family. He worked on military fortifications and engineering projects before being entrusted with the construction of the new palace, the Würzburg Residence, in 1719. This became his life's work and masterpiece, which he supervised until his death in 1753. He also designed the Schönbornkapelle of Würzburg Cathedral and several other churches and palaces for the Schönborn family and other patrons. He traveled and studied in France and Italy and was influenced by the works of Germain Boffrand, Robert de Cotte, Guarino Guarini, and Francesco Borromini. He was known for his innovative use of space, light, and decoration, creating harmonious and elegant compositions that combined architecture, sculpture, painting, and stucco work. He collaborated with many artists and craftsmen, such as Antonio Bossi, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Johann Michael Feuchtmayer, Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, and Johann Baptist Zimmermann. He was also a skilled engineer who devised ingenious solutions for water supply, heating, ventilation, and fire protection. He died in Würzburg in 1753 and was buried in the cathedral. He left behind a legacy of outstanding buildings that are considered among the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Germany.
