Friedrich Holderlin

Friedrich Hölderlin was a German poet and philosopher who played a key role in the development of German Romanticism and German idealism. He was influenced by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, and was associated with Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling. He wrote lyric poems that expressed his admiration for ancient Greece, his Christian faith, and his love for nature. He also wrote an epistolary novel called Hyperion, which explored the themes of freedom, revolution, and human destiny. Hölderlin suffered from mental illness for most of his adult life, and spent the last 36 years of his life in a tower in Tübingen, where he was cared for by a carpenter's family. He continued to write poetry, but his later works were often obscure and fragmentary. He died in 1843 at the age of 73. Hölderlin is regarded as one of the greatest German poets of all time, and his influence can be seen in the works of Rainer Maria Rilke, Martin Heidegger, Paul Celan, and others.
