About me / Bio:
Giuseppe Verdi was one of the most influential and prolific composers of opera in the 19th century. He was born in a small village near Busseto, in the Duchy of Parma, which was then under French occupation. He showed an early talent for music and received a musical education with the help of a local patron. He moved to Milan in 1832 to study at the conservatory, but was rejected for lack of formal training. He then studied privately with Vincenzo Lavigna, a former La Scala musician. Verdi's career as an opera composer began in 1839 with the premiere of his first opera, Oberto, at La Scala. The following year, he suffered a personal tragedy when his wife Margherita and their two children died within a short period of time. He fell into a deep depression and vowed to give up composing. However, he was persuaded by the impresario Merelli to write a new opera, Nabucco, which became a huge success in 1842 and established Verdi as a leading figure in Italian opera. The chorus "Va, pensiero" from Nabucco, which expresses the longing of the exiled Jews for their homeland, became a symbol of Italian nationalism and unification. Verdi went on to compose more than 20 operas over the next five decades, creating some of the most memorable characters and melodies in the history of music. His operas were influenced by his personal life, his political views, his literary interests and his musical innovations. He explored various genres and styles, from historical dramas to comedies, from tragedies to romances. Some of his most famous operas include Rigoletto (1851), Il trovatore (1853), La traviata (1853), Don Carlos (1867), Aida (1871), Otello (1887) and Falstaff (1893). He also composed a Requiem Mass (1874) in memory of his friend Alessandro Manzoni, a renowned Italian poet and novelist. Verdi was not only a musical genius, but also a generous and patriotic man. He supported various causes and charities, such as the Risorgimento movement for Italian unification, the abolition of slavery, the education of poor children and the welfare of retired musicians. He built a rest home for musicians in Milan, where he was buried after his death in 1901. He also acquired several properties in his native region, where he lived a simple and modest life with his second wife Giuseppina Strepponi, a famous soprano who had sung many of his operas. Verdi's legacy is immense and enduring. His operas are performed all over the world and are considered among the masterpieces of Western art. His music has inspired generations of composers, singers, musicians and audiences. His name is synonymous with passion, drama, beauty and humanism.
