I have come to overthrow a tyrant
About me / Bio:
Isabella was the youngest surviving child and only surviving daughter of Philip IV of France and Joan I of Navarre. She married Edward II of England in 1308, when she was only 12 years old. She supported her husband during his conflicts with the barons, who resented his favouritism towards Piers Gaveston and Hugh Despenser. She also acted as a diplomatic link between England and France, using her influence to promote peace and alliance. However, by 1325, she had grown disillusioned with Edward's weak and ineffective rule, and his inability to protect her interests and rights. She also detested Hugh Despenser, who had usurped her authority and wealth. She travelled to France on a diplomatic mission, where she met Roger Mortimer, a powerful baron who had escaped from Edward's prison. They became lovers and plotted to overthrow Edward and the Despensers. In 1326, Isabella invaded England with a small army of mercenaries and supporters. Edward's forces deserted him, and he was captured and forced to abdicate in favour of his son, Edward III. Isabella and Mortimer ruled England as regents for the young king, but they soon faced opposition from the nobility and the people, who resented their tyranny and extravagance. They also made peace with Scotland, which was unpopular among the English. In 1330, Edward III staged a coup and arrested Mortimer, who was executed for treason. Isabella was spared, but confined to a comfortable house arrest for the rest of her life. She devoted herself to religion and charity, and maintained a good relationship with her son. She died in 1358 at the age of 63. She was buried in Grey Friars' Church at Newgate, where her heart was placed in a silver casket beside her husband's tomb.
