About me / Bio:
Henri Matisse was a French visual artist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern art. He was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, a small town in northern France, where his father was a grain merchant. He studied law in Paris and worked as a court administrator before discovering his passion for painting in 1889, when he was recovering from an appendicitis attack. He enrolled in the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts, where he learned from masters such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau. He was influenced by the works of Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Japanese art. Matisse became one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement, which was characterized by the use of bright and expressive colours and simplified forms. Some of his famous paintings from this period include Woman with a Hat (1905), The Joy of Life (1906), and The Red Studio (1911). He also experimented with sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and collage. He travelled extensively and was inspired by different cultures and traditions, such as African art, Islamic art, and Byzantine art. In 1917, he moved to Nice on the French Riviera, where he developed a more relaxed and classical style of painting. He often depicted scenes of leisure and pleasure, such as odalisques, dancers, musicians, and still lifes. Some of his notable works from this period include The Dance II (1910), The Piano Lesson (1916), and The Music Lesson (1917). He also collaborated with other artists and writers, such as Pablo Picasso, André Derain, Jean Cocteau, and James Joyce. In his later years, Matisse suffered from ill health and was confined to a wheelchair. He turned to a new medium of cut paper collage, which he called "painting with scissors". He created colourful and abstract compositions by cutting shapes from painted paper and arranging them on large canvases. Some of his famous cut-outs include The Snail (1953), The Blue Nudes (1952), and The Chapel of the Rosary in Vence (1948-1951). Matisse died of a heart attack on November 3, 1954 in Nice. He is buried at the Cimiez Monastery Cemetery. His work has been widely exhibited and admired around the world. He is considered one of the pioneers of modernism and one of the greatest colourists of all time. His legacy continues to inspire generations of artists and lovers of art.
