Georges-Hilaire Dupont was a French Catholic bishop and missionary who served as the first bishop of Pala in Chad from 1964 to 1975. He was ordained a priest in 1943 for the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate and was appointed to the newly created diocese of Pala in 1964. He was consecrated on May 1, 1964 by Paul-Pierre-Yves Dalmais, the archbishop of Niamey. He participated in the Second Vatican Council and advocated for the inculturation of the liturgy and the use of local languages. He resigned from his office in 1975 and returned to France, where he served as a parish priest in various places until his retirement in 1997. He then moved to Corsica, where he was in charge of a parish until 2012. He died on January 29, 2020 at the age of 100, becoming the oldest French bishop at the time of his death. He was known for his humility, simplicity and dedication to the people of Chad. He left behind a legacy of evangelization, education and social development in his former diocese.
