Andrei Muresanu

Andrei Mureșanu was a Romanian poet and revolutionary born on November 16, 1816, in Bistrița, Transylvania. He studied philosophy and theology in Blaj and became a professor in Brașov in 1838. Mureșanu was a key figure in the 1848 revolution in Transylvania, participating in the Brașov delegation at the Blaj Assembly in May 1848. His poem "Deșteaptă-te, române!", based on a popular tune of an old religious anthem, became the hymn of the revolutionaries and later the national anthem of Romania in 1990. After the revolution, he worked as a translator in Sibiu and published patriotic works in the Telegraful Român magazine. His poetry was gathered in a single volume in 1862. Due to poor health, he passed away on October 12, 1863, in Brașov and is buried in the city's Groaveri cemetery.
