Mustafa Krantja was born on 10 April 1921 in Kavajë, Albania. He graduated from the Academy of Arts in Prague in 1950, where he studied conducting and composition. He returned to Albania and founded the Symphony Orchestra at the National Theater of Opera and Ballet in 1951. He also founded the Conservatory of Arts in 1964, which later became the University of Arts. He was one of the first conductors of the Albanian operas "Mrika" and "Skanderbeg", as well as the first Albanian ballet "Halili and Hajria". He conducted many operas and symphonies by Albanian and foreign composers, such as Dargomyzhsky, Glinka, Smetana, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Puccini, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Kono, Dungu, Gjoni, and Zadeja. He was awarded the People's Artist award in 1956 and the Dvorak Medal in 1975. He died on 4 January 2002 due to an unknown disease. He is remembered as one of the most influential and beloved musicians in Albanian history.
