Khairallah Assar

Khairallah Assar was a Syrian sociologist who taught at the University of Annaba in Algeria for 20 years. He was born in Hama, Syria, in 1935 and studied at the American University of Beirut and the University of Heidelberg, where he obtained his PhD in 1964. He taught philosophy, psychology, and educational sciences in Syria and Algeria before joining the University of Annaba in 1976. He published several books in Arabic on topics such as psycholinguistics, social psychology, social research methodology, and social cybernetics. He also supervised many PhD and MSc dissertations and was an active member of the International Sociological Association and the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. He retired in 1996 and continued to do research on religious education and how religions are taught in children textbooks. He died in 2015 at the age of 79. He was married to Elsie Benander, a Swedish woman whom he met at Göteborg University, and had three children: Saïd, Leila, and Selma.
