Muhammad al-Sufi was a Syrian field marshal who played a role in the 1963 Syrian coup d'état and briefly served as Defense Minister between March and May of that year. He was a staunch supporter of Egypt's president and leading pan-Arabist, Gamal Abdel Nasser, and opposed Syria's secession from the United Arab Republic in 1961. He was part of a unionist coalition of officers that planned to overthrow the secessionist government, but was taken off guard by the early launch of the coup by his Ba'athist and independent rivals. He was appointed as Defense Minister by Prime Minister Salah al-Din Bitar, but soon faced tensions with the Ba'athists who dominated the new government. He was sidelined by his rivals and departed the political scene before returning to Syria in the 1990s. He died in 2018 at the age of 90 or 91.
