Abdul Qader Barmada

Abdul Qader Barmada was a Syrian politician who was deputy for the Harem District in the Syrian Parliament for two terms (1943 and 1947). He was born in 1911 in Harem, a town in the Idlib Governorate of Syria. He came from a prominent family that had a history of political and social activism. He studied law and became a lawyer and a judge. He was elected to the Syrian Parliament in 1943 and 1947, representing the Harem District. He was a member of the National Bloc, the main nationalist party that opposed the French mandate over Syria. He was also a supporter of the Syrian independence and unity with Iraq and Transjordan. He was known for his eloquence and his advocacy for the rights of the people of his region. He opposed the military coups that took place in Syria in the 1950s and 1960s, and was sentenced to civil isolation for ten years by the Ba'athist regime in 1963. He died in Aleppo on December 18, 2000, at the age of 89. He is remembered as one of the prominent figures of the Syrian national movement and a defender of democracy and human rights.
