Grand Ayatollah Asif Mohseni was a prominent Afghan Twelver Shi'a Marja', widely considered to have been the most powerful in Afghanistan. He was the founder of the Islamic Movement of Afghanistan. Born in Qandahar, Afghanistan, he studied in the seminars of Najaf under Grand Ayatollahs Abul Qasim Khoei, Muhsin al-Hakim, and Abdul A'la Sabzwari. In the 1960s, he founded the movement Subh-i Danish, which gained popularity among the Shi'a youth of Kabul. He also founded the Islamic Movement of Afghanistan in 1978, a Shi'a anti-Soviet resistance movement and political party. Mohseni owned Tamadon TV and was involved in drafting the controversial Shi'a Family Law in 2009. His legacy includes his religious leadership and his contributions to the political and cultural landscape of Afghanistan.
