Baltazar Nicolai Garben

Baltazar Nicolai Garben was a Norwegian military officer, engineer, and government minister. He is most associated with the design and construction of various buildings, especially in Halden, where he worked for nearly 30 years. He designed several buildings at Fredriksten fortress, such as the old and new commander's residence, the arsenal, and the clock tower. He also supervised the construction of Immanuels church by Christian Grosch and contributed to the design of the drawings. His main work is considered to be Fredrikshalds teater, a strictly designed wooden building completed in 1841. He also designed a drawbridge over the moat outside the main gate of Akershus fortress, built in 1848, later modified by Gudolf Blakstad. He was a chamberlain for Charles III John and later a member of the interim governments in Stockholm during Oscar I's absence. He was awarded the Order of St. Olav and the Order of the Sword for his services. He died in Asker in 1867.
