Luis Barragan

Luis Barragán was a Mexican engineer and architect who won the Pritzker Prize in 1980. He grew up on a ranch near Guadalajara and studied engineering and architecture at the Escuela Libre de Ingenieros. He traveled extensively in Europe and was influenced by the works of Ferdinand Bac and Le Corbusier. He moved to Mexico City in 1935 and developed his own style of emotional architecture, using simple forms, vivid colors, natural light, and water features. He designed many houses, gardens, plazas, and fountains that reflect his unique vision and cultural identity. Some of his most famous works include the Torres de Satélite, the Casa Gilardi, the San Cristóbal Stables, and his own house and studio, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He was also involved in urban planning projects such as El Pedregal, Las Arboledas, and Lomas Verdes. He was a private and reserved person who rarely gave interviews or published his works. He died of heart failure in 1988 and was buried in the Rotonda de Jaliscienses Ilustres, a monument dedicated to the illustrious people of Jalisco.
