Chen Lin was born on 31 January 1970 in Fengjie County, Chongqing, China. She started her singing career in 1993 with the album I Can Never Understand Your Love, which topped the Chinese album charts and sold 1.5 million copies. She became one of the most popular singers in China and released six more albums until 2005. She was known for her powerful and emotional voice and her songs that expressed the feelings of women. She also sang the theme songs for some TV dramas and movies. She married Shen Yongge, a singer and record producer, in 1995 and divorced him in 2007. She married Zhang Chaofeng, another singer and producer, in July 2009 and released her last EP in August 2009. She suffered from depression and emotional problems and committed suicide by jumping from a building in Beijing on 31 October 2009, the birthday of her ex-husband Shen Yongge. She was widely mourned by her fans and the music industry and was regarded as one of the best Mandopop singers of her generation.
