Hau Pei-tsun

Hau Pei-tsun was a Chinese general and politician who served as the premier of the Republic of China from 1990 to 1993. He graduated from the Republic of China Military Academy and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He served in the Chinese expeditionary forces in India during World War II and as a staff officer in the Chinese Civil War. He held various positions in the ROC Army, such as the commander of the 9th Infantry Division, the 3rd Corps, the 1st Field Army, and the Chief of the General Staff. He was also the Minister of National Defense from 1989 to 1990. He was elected as the premier by the National Assembly in 1990, but resigned in 1993 due to political conflicts. He was known for his economic reforms, his diplomatic skills, and his moderate views. He was involved in several important negotiations, such as the Three Links, the Taiwan Relations Act, and the Kaohsiung Incident. He was also a leader of the education and culture sector, and promoted democracy and human rights. He was the father of Hau Lung-pin, a former mayor of Taipei, and Hau Shu-chuan, a former legislator. He died in March 2020 at age 100.
