Yu Kuo-hwa

Yu Kuo-hwa was a Chinese banker and politician who served as the premier of the Republic of China from 1984 to 1989. He graduated from St. John's University in Shanghai and worked as a banker at the Bank of China and the Central Trust of China. He joined the ROC government in 1969 as Minister of Finance, and later became Governor of the Central Bank of China in 1975. He was elected as the premier by the National Assembly in 1984, and served under President Chiang Ching-kuo and Lee Teng-hui. He was known for his economic reforms, his diplomatic skills, and his moderate views. He was involved in several important events, such as the lifting of martial law, the opening of cross-strait relations, the establishment of the National Development Council, and the promotion of the Six-Year National Development Plan. He resigned in 1989 due to health reasons, and lived in retirement until his death in 2000. He was regarded as one of the most influential and respected figures in modern Taiwanese history.
