Sam Obi

Sam Obi was a Nigerian politician and pastor who served in various capacities in the Delta State government. He started his political career as a councillor, before becoming a local government chairman. He was elected as a member of the Delta State house of assembly in 2003, representing Ika North East constituency for three terms. He became the speaker of the house in 2010, after the previous speaker was removed by the court. He also became the acting governor of Delta State in 2010, after the court annulled the 2007 gubernatorial election and ordered a rerun. He handed over to Emmanuel Uduaghan in 2011, after he won the by-election. He later served as a special adviser to the governor Ifeanyi Okowa until 2019. He was also the founder and general overseer of Oracle of God Ministry, a church in Asaba, where he preached until his death. He was a prince and member of the Ute-Okpu royal family. He died on 3 April 2021, at his residence in Asaba, after a brief illness. He was described as a bastion of peace, a loyal party man, and a devout Christian by his colleagues and associates.
