Evan Enwerem

Evan Enwerem was a Nigerian politician who served as the 7th president of the Nigerian Senate in 1999. He was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. He obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. He served as chairman of the Nigerian Airports Authority between 1980 and 1983. He was elected governor of Imo State in 1991 during the failed Third Republic era of Nigerian government. He became the first President of the Nigerian Senate during Nigeria's Fourth Republic. He beat his chief rival, Senator Chuba Okadigbo, for the Senate presidency on 3 June 1999 with the support of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. However, he did not hold the post for very long, as he was removed from office on 18 November 1999, following allegations of corruption and falsification of his name. He remained a member of the Senate until 2003. He expressed an interest in making good laws that would have wide, sweeping and enduring effects on the populace. He died on 2 August 2007 in Abuja after a long battle with kidney failure. He was survived by his wife, seven children and many grandchildren. He was buried in his hometown of Ikeduru on 25 August 2007.
