He challenged the Islamist ideology and its demand for Sharia law, and criticized leading Islamist figures for their hypocrisy and inconsistency. He also advocated for democracy, pluralism, and tolerance in the Egyptian society. He was assassinated on 8 June 1992 by members of the Islamist group al-Jama'a al-Islamiyya after being accused of blasphemy by a committee of scholars at al-Azhar University. His death sparked a public outcry and a debate over the role of religion in politics. His collected works were banned in December 1992, but his legacy remains influential among Egyptian intellectuals and activists.
