Mustafa Khalil

Mustafa Khalil was an Egyptian politician who played an integral role in the negotiations that led to the 1979 Camp David Accords peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. He accompanied President Anwar Sadat on his historic visit to Jerusalem in 1977, and later headed the Egyptian delegation at Camp David. He served as the Prime Minister of Egypt from 1978 to 1980, and also as the Foreign Minister from 1979 to 1980. He was the secretary general of the Arab Socialist Union and the deputy chairman of the National Democratic Party. He was born in Qalyubia and received his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He died in 2008 at the age of 88 in a Cairo hospital. He was survived by his wife, Nehal, his son Hisham, a businessman and former parliamentarian, and his daughter Zeinab. He was honored with a state funeral attended by President Hosni Mubarak and other dignitaries.
