About me / Bio:
Nurul Amin was a Pakistani politician and statesman who served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1971 to 1972 and the Vice President of Pakistan from 1970 to 1972. He was born in a Bengali Muslim family and was educated at the Calcutta University and the Oxford University. He joined the Swaraj Party in 1923 and became the Deputy Mayor of Calcutta in 1924. He later joined the Muslim League and became a close associate of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He served as the Parliamentary Secretary to Khawaja Nazimuddin and later as the Health and Finance Minister of Bengal under Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy. He played a controversial role in the Direct Action Day of 1946, when violence erupted between Muslims and Hindus in Calcutta. He was also one of the two secretaries of the Partition Council that oversaw the division of assets between India and Pakistan in 1947. He joined the foreign service of Pakistan and served as the ambassador to Burma, Canada, and the United States. He was appointed as the Prime Minister of Pakistan by President Yahya Khan in 1971, after the resignation of Nur Khan. He faced several challenges during his tenure, such as the Bangladesh Liberation War, the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, and the 1971 Pakistani coup d'état. He tried to negotiate a peaceful settlement with the Awami League and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, but failed to prevent the secession of East Pakistan. He also supported the polio eradication program and the Islamic Summit Conference. He resigned in 1972, after the surrender of Pakistan to India and the formation of Bangladesh. He retired from politics and lived in Rawalpindi until his death in 1974. He was considered a loyal and patriotic leader who tried to preserve the unity and integrity of Pakistan.
