Yusuf Salman Yusuf was a communist activist and the first secretary of the Iraqi Communist Party from 1941 to 1949. He was born in Baghdad in 1901 to an Assyrian family. He joined the Ottoman army as a young man and later participated in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman rule. He became interested in socialism and communism in the late 1920s and traveled to Moscow for training. He returned to Iraq and organized strikes and protests against the British-backed monarchy. He was arrested several times and spent many years in prison. He became the leader of the Iraqi Communist Party in 1941 and expanded its membership and influence. He opposed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty of 1948 and supported the Palestinian cause. He was arrested again in 1947 and sentenced to death by hanging. He was executed in 1949, becoming a martyr for the Iraqi communist movement.
