Wathiq Naji was an Iraqi football manager, who took the team to the 1986 edition of the FIFA World Cup, their first and only appearance in the competition. He was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1940, and started his career as a midfielder for Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya. He later became a coach and managed several clubs, such as Al-Zawraa and Al-Naft. He also coached the Iraq national football team four times, most notably in 1986, when he led them to qualify for the World Cup in Mexico. He was praised for his tactical skills and his ability to motivate his players. He died in 2014, at the age of 74, from a heart attack in Canada. He is regarded as one of the most successful and influential football managers in Iraq's history.
