Adnan Pachachi

Adnan Pachachi was a veteran Iraqi and Emirati politician and diplomat. He was the son of Muzahim al-Pachachi, a prominent Iraqi politician and nationalist. He studied law and economics in Istanbul, London, and Vienna, and became the official translator for the Iraqi government in Baghdad. He was elected as Baghdad's deputy representative to the first Ottoman Parliament in 1908. He was a vocal supporter of Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Arab nationalist movement. He served as Iraq's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1959 to 1965 and Foreign Minister of Iraq from 1965 to 1967, during the Six-Day War with Israel. He left Iraq in 1971 and became an Emirati Minister of State and political advisor to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He returned to Iraq after the 2003 invasion and was involved in the Iraqi Governing Council and the Iraqi Interim Government. He founded the Assembly of Independent Democrats, a secular and liberal political party. He was nominated for the presidency of Iraq in 2004, but declined the offer. He died of natural causes in Abu Dhabi in 2019.
