Mazzaropi was a Brazilian actor and comedian, who was born as Amácio Mazzaropi in 1912. He was the son of two Italian immigrants, a shoemaker and a housewife. He started his career as a circus performer and a radio announcer, and later moved to cinema, where he was a producer and a star of 32 films, most of them comedies featuring his character Jeca Tatu, a portrayal of the Brazilian rural folk. He was one of the most popular and successful filmmakers in Brazil, reaching millions of spectators with his humorous and simple style. He also founded his own film studio, PAM Filmes, in Taubaté, where he produced and distributed his movies. He died of cancer in 1981, at the age of 69.
